Pastoralists and other indigenous livestock keepers have created breeds that are a crucial asset for humanity in adapting to climate change, conserving biological diversity and sustaining food production in harsh and challenging environments..

Biocultural protocols are a means of bringing to light the crucial role of communities in conserving indigenous breeds and in maintaining the web of life that depends on them.

The film showcases biocultural protocls highlighting the Raika community of Rajasthan and the Samburu of kenya.

Developing Biocultural protocols is an important means of implementing both paragraph 8j of the CBD and strategic priority 6 of the Global Plan of Action on Animal Genetic Resources.

India’s pastoralists have created a myriad of livestock breeds that are optimally adapted to the country’s diverse landcsapes and eco-systems. These breeds are an important part of India’s biodiversity and make a major contribution to food security by producing milk, meat, manure, draught power and various other products.

But these valuable and eco-friendly production systems face many challenges and threats.

This film narrates the story of how India’s pastoralists act as “Keepers of Genes” and their struggle for survival and recognition.

This study by LPP member Evelyn Mathias investigates the impact of the Livestock Revolution on farmers. The results provide some major food for thought. They do suggest that livestock has turned in many cases from an asset into a liability, since farmers and livestock keepers, in order to remain competitive, are drawn into a debt trap, because of high initial investments on one side, and because they are squeezed between escalating input prices and the consolidated power of the food processors and supermarket chains on the other.

Poignantly, the author concludes that due to the financial squeeze many farmers find themselves in a position that “forces them to cut costs wherever they can, and creates strong incentives to unethical behaviour.” This observation would seem crucial with respect to current concerns and initiatives to structure and channel the global livestock sector onto a more sustainable track.

The theme is “Closing the efficiency gap”. How will “efficiency” be defined and which factors will be taken into account? A major focus will be on green house gas emissions per unit of livestock product, but will externalities also be figured in, such as biodiversity, disease outbreaks, soil fertility, etc? This will be an interesting process to observe – and influence! The tentative agenda of the workshop is here.
